2015 Volvo S60

New for 2015

The S60 gets a host of new features for 2015, including a new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, eight-speed automatic transmission, and several additional technology features. A new Platinum trim level also replaces the previous Premier Plus.

A New Kind of Volvo

Volvo has a reputation for building very safe and very practical cars that, despite their virtues, can never really quicken the pulse. The 2015 S60 sedan looks poised to shatter that preconception.

With its array of high-tech safety features and fuel-efficient engines, the S60 still does what everyone expects a Volvo to do, but it also has a wilder side. The styling is sleeker than ever before, the chassis makes for nimble handling, and those engines manage to provide plenty of power without guzzling fuel. It’s a whole new kind of Volvo.

Powertrains and Performance

The 2015 Volvo S60 is available with a variety of powertrain options that combine efficiency with sportiness and the reassuring driving dynamics of a solidly Swedish Volvo.

New for 2015 is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine from Volvo’s efficiency-focused Drive-E lineup. Standard in the S60 T5 Drive-E, it’s part of Volvo’s effort to downsize engines for fuel economy without sacrificing power, and doesn’t disappoint on that count with 240 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.

There’s also a second version of the 2.0-liter engine with both turbocharging and supercharging in the S60 T6 Drive-E, which produces 302 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. That propels the S60 from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.6 seconds, compared to 6.0 seconds for the turbo-only version.

Both Drive-E engines come standard with a new “Geartronic” eight-speed automatic transmission, along with fuel-saving start-stop systems as part of an Eco+ suite of features that also includes Eco-coast and Eco-climate functions.

That technology pays off with impressive fuel economy for the front-wheel drive Drive-E models. The S60 T5 model gets an EPA-rated 29 mpg combined (25 mpg city, 37 mpg highway)*, while the T6 gets 28 mpg combined (24 mpg city, 35 mpg highway)*.

The S60 is also available with all-wheel drive, and there are two engine options available with that drivetrain.

The S60 T5 AWD model gets a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-five, with 250 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque., while the S60 T6 AWD R-Design features a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six producing 325 hp and 354 lb-ft. Both all-wheel drive models use six-speed automatic transmissions.

With the five-cylinder engine, the S60 will do 0 to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds and return an EPA-rated 23 mpg combined (20 mpg city, 29 mpg highway)*, while the six-cylinder R-Design does 0 to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds, and gets 22 mpg combined (19 mpg city, 28 mpg highway)*.

Features and Trims

The 2015 Volvo S60 is only available as a four-door, five-seat sedan, but if you want a wagon Volvo’s V60 fits that bill. The S60 comes in three trim levels, with prices starting at $33,750**.

The base S60 comes standard with dual-zone automatic climate control, power adjustable front seats,a rear-seat/trunk pass through, sport steering wheel, power lumbar support, Volvo’s Sensus Connect and On Call services with a 6-month complimentary subscription, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. A quick-fold front seat is also available as a standalone option.

In addition to the applicable standard features from the base model, the S60 Premier adds a power moonroof,a TFT gauge cluster display, auto-dimming rearview mirror, navigation system, leather seats, and other features.

The top S60 trim level is the Platinum, which incorporates all of the standard and many of the optional features from the other two models, with an equipment list that includes Keyless Drive, auto-dimming outside mirrors, active dual xenon headlights with washers, accent lighting, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system, and other equipment.

Exterior/Interior

The 2015 Volvo S60 throws away the boxy exterior styling Volvo is traditionally known for, replacing it with a much slipperier shape featuring a low, coupe-like roofline, a modernized version of the Volvo-signature egg crate grille, and dynamic proportions.

The interior defies stereotypes too. Volvo sedans used to straddle the line between utility and luxury, but the S60 goes all the way upscale. It boasts a cleanly-designed cabin with available leather seats and wood trim, plus the latest infotainment features.

Safety

Befitting Volvo’s reputation for safety consciousness, the 2015 S60 comes with one of the most comprehensive arrays of safety equipment in its class. Standard equipment includes anti-lock brakes, stability and traction controls, a full suite of airbags, and Volvo’s City Safety system.

Several electronic driver aids are also available as options, including adaptive cruise control, collision warning and pedestrian/cyclist detection with full auto brake, driver alert control, blind-spot information, cross traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keep aid, and park-assist pilot.

Bottom Line

The 2015 Volvo S60 is a smartly-designed, high-tech luxury sedan that’s both sensible and desirable.
