New for 2016
It's hard to imagine the XC70 improving further, but Volvo has made the 2016 XC70 even more attractive by replacing the wagon's previous 3.2-liter inline six-cylinder with a turbocharged 2.5-liter inlinve five-cylinder that is more fuel efficient. Gone now is the previous T6 turbocharged inline six-cylinder. New standard features include 18-inch wheels and heated front seats.
Weather Warrior
If you’re looking for luxury vehicle to weather snowstorms or venture out to your vacation cabin, you’re immediate reaction may shop for an SUV. While there are plenty of excellent SUVs to choose from, Volvo’s own XC60 and XC90 spring to mind, not everyone wants or needs a high-riding utility vehicle. For discerning buyers that prefer to travel down a different path, the 2016 Volvo XC70 is a terrific choice.
Powertrains and Performance
The standard engine powering the 2016 XC70 is a turbocharged T5 Drive-E engine that delivers 240 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Last year's '"Geartronic" eight-speed automatic returns and one again deftly handles shifting duties, delivering smooth shifts and acceleration across the powerband. Front-wheel drive is standard.
Part of what makes the T5 Drive-E setup so great is its efficiency. And the numbers don't lie, with the T5 earning an EPA estimated 26 mpg combined (23 city/31 highway).* Contributing to the XC70's efficienct is an automatic engine stop/start system that shuts off the engine while the vehicle is stopped.
Change is good, especially when it allows for an even more confident and capable engine. For 2016, the XC70 T5 AWD benefits from a new turbocharged inline five-cylinder that delivers 250 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque. Replacing the eight-speed automatic is a "Geartronic" six-speed automatic. This engine configuration also benefits from all-wheel drive to provide additional grip in all situations.
In terms of fuel economy, the T5 AWD setup maintains impressive numbers by returning an EPA estimated 22 mpg combined (19 city/26 highway).*
Features and Trims
The 2016 Volvo XC70 is a five passenger wagon that starts at $37,100** and comes in four trim levels: T5 Drive-E, T5 Platinum, T5 All-wheel Drive, and T5 AWD Platinum.
Value is always an important factor when purchasing a vehicle so it pleases us to report that Volvo’s XC70 comes with a robust list of features and equipment. XC70 T5 Drive-E and XC70 T5 AWD models get standard 18-inch alloy wheels, foglights, and underbody skid plates.
Inside, the feature list is just as impressive, with heated side mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, and heated eight-way power driver seat all standard. The XC70 will also please tech lovers thanks to standard features that include a 7-inch central display screen, Volvo’s Sensus Connect system, Bluetooth® phone and audio connectivity, and an eight-speaker sound system—complete with CD player, satellite radio, and USB port. A low-speed collision notification and mitigation system is also standard.
Stepping up to the Premier package adds amenities such as a sunroof, leather upholstery, a navigation system, rear privacy glass, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a configurable instrument cluster.
Move one step up to the Platinum and the XC90 adds adaptive xenon headlights, interior accent lighting, an upgraded 12-speaker harmon/kardon sound system, blind-spot monitoring system, and more.
The XC70 can be further outfitted with a number of additional packages. The Technology package adds adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlight control, an upgraded collision mitigation system, road sign information, lane departure warning, and a driver alertness monitor.
Select the Convenience package and you get a fold-flat front passenger seat that helps increase cargo capacity, a cargo cover, a pop-up rear grocery bag holder, and power-folding rear head restraints.
The Proximity package adds keyless ignition/entry, a rearview camera, and a power liftgate, while the Climate package includes heating for the rear seats, windshield, steering wheel, and windshield washer nozzles.
As if that wasn’t enough, the XC90 also gets access to a number of standalone options. The most compelling of which for adults are the front and rear parking sensors. You can also score some points with your little ones by way of the XC90’s available rear entertainment system with dual displays.
Safety
The 2016 Volvo XC70 comes standard with City Safety. This driver support system aims to prevent or mitigate certain collisions by pre-charging brakes or automatically applying brake pressure. It’s an advanced and clever system that should help drivers feel even more secure behind the wheel.
A height-adjustable integrated booster cushion is now optional on all trim levels and works in tandem with an extended inflatable curtain, providing exceptional safety for children in the rear seat. Dynamic Stability and Traction Control, and Intelligent Driver Information System, and driver and front passenger airbags are all included on every XC70.
