Iconic Models from Volvo
Volvo spent a lot of time pushing the boundaries of the automotive industry, and the results are pretty clear. Over the years, the automaker created vehicles that not only performed well, but that also changed the industry at large. These iconic models became ingrained in the history of the car community when they were first introduced and continue to spark interest years later. The team here at Volvo Cars Silver Spring has put together some of our favorite Volvo vehicles throughout the years to celebrate how far the brand has come.
PV444
Production for the Volvo PV444 started in 1947, and the model helped celebrate the end of World War II. This smaller Volvo model featured a 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine capable of up to 40 horsepower. It isn’t the timeless styling of the Volvo PV444 that makes it such an icon (though it doesn’t hurt), or even the fact that the model was the most successful Volvo up until that time. Its iconic status comes from the fact that it was the first Volvo model sold in the United States. In 1955, the first PV444s were delivered in Los Angeles and California, and the next year Volvo became the second most popular import brand in California. The timeless and classy design of the PV444 has permeated through the years, as the automaker evolved into an evolutionary global brand.
240
Introduced in 1974, the Volvo 240 began a run of almost two decades of success. Available with either a 97-horsepower carburetor engine or a 123-horsepower fuel injected engine, the 240 built upon the previous 140, with more distinct styling, space, and luxury. It became incredibly popular thanks to a variety of powertrain options, as well as two, four, and five-door versions. In the mid-70s, Volvo invested in safety, emissions, and performance technology, which made the Volvo 240 a proving-ground for the automaker’s innovations. Even today, the Volvo 240 is popular among enthusiasts for its performance and unique personality.
XC90
As the SUV market began to explode, Volvo fans were begging for the automaker to enter the segment. Finally, in 2002, Volvo launched the XC90. The brand’s fuel efficiency, luxury, and innovation created a new benchmark for the segment. Systems like Roll Stability Control, Roll Over Protection System, Inflatable side curtains, and fold-flat rear seats solved many issues other car makers hadn’t addressed yet. Options for five-, six-, and eight-cylinder engines were available by 2004, which helped the XC90 achieve capability as well as safety. This model continues to push the limits of the segment, offering industry-leading safety, efficiency, and new technology.
Today, Volvo is one of the largest car manufacturers in the world and continues to create vehicles that push the industry to the next level.
